Don't write it for the readers, write it for you; that way, anyone reading it (I'll likely have a look), is a lovely extra.
This, FWIW, is my rule in my fiction, and why I don't worry about how long it takes me to pick back up a narrative thread. It hasn't ever made money (just about broke even when I reduced the cast of the paper book as low as Lulu would let me) but it's not any grief.
